"Feeling" Exercises with Bowls
-
Lying down in a relaxed way and placing the bowl on different parts of the body, such as the stomach or chest or even the head, you can observe the effects of the sound in as many ways possible. Sitting in a chair you can try putting the bowl on your feet or thighs and knees. This way you can feel the different physical sensations as well as the different sounds.
-
Larger bowls particularly, it is possible to feel the vibrations of the bowl when holding your hand at some distance from the edge, where they are felt as a flow of warm air radiating from the bowl. Now sense the whole sound shapes around the outside and inside of the bowl.
-
Feeling the sound vibrations and absorbing them into your body is to stroke the side of the bowl immediately after it was struck. Also with your tongue or lips. See what feelings or emotions are evoked in different parts of the body.
Feelings of Release, Relaxation, Order or Stimulation
Try not to analyse, but just experience the sound. One can develop an inner experience of the relationship between form and sound, and even see visions of geometrical shapes. The shape of the sound imprints itself directly on the inner retina, without the intervention of a medium such as water, or sand on a sheet of glass.
-
First place the bowl, whilst lying down, on your body (stomach or chest). Now strike the rim of the bowl with a beater, let the sound ring our. Sense the vibrations spreading throughout your body to the extremities of your limbs. Repeat the beating of the rim in intervals.
Most importantly, do not listen to the sound with your ears but direct all your attention to your own body. What do you feel ? What signals does the body produces as a reflection of the bowl's vibrations ?
-
In bowl or bell rubbing, the pressure and the speed at which the bowl is rubbed have and influence on the sound and pitch of the tone produced. Experiment with different types of wood "dampen" them with may be leather or a little piece of chamois or the inner tube of a bicycles, or ultimately a violin bow with a bit of resin and strike at the rim of bowl or bell and enjoy the sound.
